Thousands of holidays ‘canceled’ as easyJet, all UK flights go to hotspots

EasyJet has announced that all services from UK airports to Hurghada in Egypt have been canceled until the end of July, potentially spelling misery for those who booked the getaway

EasyJet will cancel more than 20 daily half-period flights from Gatwick

Thousands of holidaymakers are faced with finding a last-minute deal after EasyJet canceled all flights to Hurghada for two months.

For June and July, no budget airline service will run from the UK to the Egyptian holiday resort.

EasyJet was forced to cancel hundreds of flights in total over the past few months for a variety of reasons, from IT failures to staffing issues.

Services to Hurghada appear to have been tense for some time, with a couple telling Mirror how they were stuck there for an additional 11 days after three of their flights were cancelled.

Many customers have expressed their anger over the cancellation of flights.

One woman wrote online, “Thank you for canceling my parents flight less than 48 hours ago, thank you for canceling my parents flight.”

“Just spent hours looking for new flights/refunds and consoled two very upset people waiting for a decent earning break! Absolutely shabby.”

Another woman said: “EasyJet canceled my partner’s return flight from Hurghada on 28 June There is no substitute for Gatwick airport, are you serious??!!!”

An airline spokesperson said: “EasyJet is operating 1,700 flights each day carrying up to a quarter of a million customers.

“There are industry wide operational issues that are affecting airlines at the moment, which means we have had several pre-emptive cancellations, including not operating from the UK to Hurghada for the remainder of June and July.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused. We are notifying customers in advance to minimize the impact on their plans and offer the option to travel or rebook before receiving a refund, And our customer service hours have been extended to support affected customers.

“We continue to closely monitor the operation and take advance action as needed.”

What to do if your flight is canceled

If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a full refund or replacement flight to reach your destination.

Citizen Advice also adds: “If you are partially through with a trip and you do not want a replacement flight, you also have the right to return to the airport you originally departed from.

“Ask for a refund or replacement at the airport if you can. If not, you can claim it with the airline later.

“You also have a legal right to:

  • Help with costs – if you are delayed by two or more hours with a cancellation.
  • Compensation – if you are delayed by two or more hours from the proposed replacement flight and you are given less than two weeks’ notice.”

Since Easter, there has been increasing pressure on airlines to operate flights on time and in the air.

EasyJet and BA have collectively canceled thousands of trips so far, many of which are expected over the summer holidays.

This week the UK government and aviation regulator ordered airlines to ensure all their advertised flights go ahead this summer.

The Department of Transport and Civil Aviation Authority wrote a joint letter to the aviation industry on Tuesday, saying “more needs to be done” to guarantee the summer holiday season will not be affected by further disruptions.

It follows “unacceptable visuals” at UK airports in recent weeks.

Airlines were told to cancel flights early rather than cancel them at the last minute, and to “re-review” their plans to develop a delivery schedule for the summer.
